Tyler Monroe brought the Winged Sprints to the green with Austin Hager on the outside for the first ever Tater Cup 100 lap race dubbed the “Showdown in Downtown” Monroe took off for a quick lead which ended up being the safest place to be. Before the field completed the first lap Hager’s coolant line broke spraying water all over him which caused him to slow on the front stretch stacking up half field behind. Dave Quick tumbled to the infield. Kenny Hamilton slid to a stop in the dirt with major front end damage that a fast working pit crew was able to repair before the race restarted. Matt Cullum and Cody Veenstra piled up on the front stretch and Cory Lockwood nosed in to the front stretch wall. Chris Rattarree also was involved but was able to continue without pitting. The Legends 40 lap invitational Austin Christopherson memorial traveling cup race started with Darin Turpin on the pole flanked by Rob Collins on the outside. As the green flag flew Turpin pulled ahead but Tyler Monroe moved up and put some pressure on the leader. An early wreck on turn one involving Lloyd Bigler, Rob Collins, and another driver stopped the race for cleanup. As the race restarted Turpin had the lead with Monroe and Camron Madsen right behind. Monroe and Madsen moved to side by side but after one lap a disabled car brought out another caution. Turpin again had the lead at the restart but last week’s mid race leader, Travis Anderson, had by this point moved to fourth place on a mad dash to the front. After two laps Nick Johnson, who started tenth, moved up beside the leaders and passed on the outside and ran away from the pack putting lapped cars and over a half lap between him and Monroe by the time the race was a third over. Another caution on lap 14 brought the leader back in sight of the second place Monroe except for three lapped cars that partially blocked his view. Johnson took off at the green and Monroe quickly dispatched the lapped cars but still could not keep up. One more lap brought out one more caution but this time Monroe was tight to Johnson’s bumper at the restart and held on for a lap or two but Johnson again left the pack behind. As the race wound down to 25 laps Johnson had a large lead followed by TJ Monroe Camron Madsen and Travis Anderson.

Shawn Smith stays out of trouble and wins Winged Sprint race.

Meridian, Idaho – The early season blues tainted the Winged Sprints forty lap main event at ASA member track, Meridian Speedway, on Saturday May 3, when two of the sprint cars touched tires along the front stretch. The resulting wreck collected and wadded up almost half the field. In a wreck that tempts many to employ the overused phrase “the big one”, Sierra Jackson and Jimmy Hamilton Jr. connected with several other cars that took the field from fourteen down to eight at the next restart. Also involved in the accident were Jimmy Hamilton Sr., Kenny Hamilton, Austin Hager, and Cody Veenstra. [Read Full Story]

"I am here to race," says TJ. "I can keep up with them."

"You really don't want to think about the speed," says the 15-year-old stock car driver. "You just think about the car in front of you. Once you're in the lead, you just think how long the race is to go...just want to win."

Not only does TJ want to win, he does win. With two main event victories and two trophy dash wins, TJ makes racing look easy.

But for his parents watching, it's a terrifying ride.

"Oh yeah, we worry. We're up there on the fence, when there's 20 cars out there and he's in the middle of them, there's cars crashing. You think about it all the time, your heart rate races. But he holds his own, he does a good job out there," says TJ's father Troy.

"The hardest part for (me) was the other competitors," adds TJ's mother Yvette. "'Don't pick on my baby'. But we're doing better this year. He's proven to be a good driver."

"It's an adrenaline rush," says TJ. "week in and out, you learn something new everytime...every race, pretty much."

TJ has been racing competitively longer than he's owned a driver's license. Racing stock cars is a far cry fron the tiny go-cart he piloted starting from the age of five.

"I don't think any of us realized how good he would be in the street stocks," says Yvette "In go-carts he was good, but he just took to it...just like a natural thing for him."
